Sights
The well-known sights of the region are: the unique architectural complex of Gosprom, the first university of Eastern Ukraine - the Karazin National University, the biggest square in Europe - Svoboda square, the memorial complex of the Ukrainian philosopher and enlightener Grigoriy Skovoroda in the village of Skovorodinovka, Repin Memorial Arts Museum and a number of churches and cathedrals, such as Pokrovskiy Cathedral of 1689, Uspenskiy Cathedral of 1771, Preobrazhenskiy Cathedral of the 17th century and Nikolaevskaya Church of the 19th century in Izyum.
The territory of the Kharkiv region still holds numerous ancient architectural monuments dated from the 16-17th centuries.

From the very beginning up today
Kharkivschynà is considered the very centre of Eastern Ukrainian land, whose ancient history dates back to the 7-10th centuries. At all times this region has been a centre of active trade and diplomacy, an area of intensive contacts and a point of confluence of different civilizations and cultures.
Today the region is divided into 27 territorial districts and comprises 20 cities, 58 township settlements and 1656 villages.
The population of the region is about 2.9 million people. The urban population is 78.7%. The average population density is 100 people per one square km.

Science & Education
The Kharkiv region is the capital city of science and student life in Ukraine. Its 46 higher education institutions give education to students from all over the world. Every 9th student in Ukraine studies in Kharkiv. The region counts over 60 scientific research institutes. Kharkivschyna is the birthplace for many fundamental scientific research works. The first nuclear fission, the research into the nature of superconductivity and the creation of the first radiotelescope all took place in Kharkiv.

Agriculture
The rich chernozem soil of Kharkivschyna provides excellent conditions for growing a wide variety of agricultural products. The region specializes in production of corn, sugar beet, sunflower, fruits and vegetables.
Agricultural machinery construction is also actively developing.

Transport
The Kharkiv region has a wide transport network. The railway handles over 60% of transportation volume.
Kharkiv International Airport increases its passenger operations by over 40% every year.

Medicine
The Kharkiv region is an important medical centre of Ukraine and counts over 200 hospitals. It has a broad network of specialized centres for scientific research and institutions providing qualified medical services to the population.
Industries
The share of industrial production is over 50% of the GDP of the region. The remaining half is shared between other industries, such as transportation, agriculture etc.
The region is second in gas recovery in Ukraine.
The industrial structure of the region is characterized by the significant share of heavy industry and high-technology production.
The leading role here belongs to the enterprises which specialize in manufacturing navigation systems for rockets and spacecrafts.
The Kharkiv aircraft plant produces such world-famous airplanes as AN 140-100, ÀN 74-200, ÀN 74-300, as well as components for the AN 148 plane.
The "Turboatom" plant produces steam, gas and hydraulic turbines for the atomic power stations, which effectively function in over 40 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and America.


The Chairman of the Regional Council Vasiliy Salygin has had a meeting with William Taylor, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the USA in Ukraine.
