Ukraine's Vice Prime Minister, Olexandr Vilkul, First Deputy Chairman of Kharkiv Regional Council, Olena Oleshko, Deputy Heads of the Regional State Administration, Igor Shurma and Yevgen Savin, Deputy Mayor, Igor Terekhov, acquainted themselves with the progress of work at the site of construction of the sports arena for staging the European Basketball Championship in 2015. 

The building of Kharkiv Region's sports infrastructure is happening on conditions of state-private partnership, in particular, the major investor in the construction of "Kharkiv Arena" is the Eastern-European Fuel And Energy Company.  It is expected that the sum of financing will amount to 350 million UAH. At the moment, the state examination of design-and-finance documentation of the future arena is complete. 

The four-storey "Kharkiv Arena", 170 by 80 metres, is designed for seating over 6,000 for basketball matches;  over 5,000 for hockey games; and over 7,000 for holding mass events. The arena comprises a spectators hall (with movable and stationary stands), 2 gymnasiums and a sports school, a cloack room, auxilary and technical premises.  The construction is going on at 5 hectares of  land near the Kharkiv Palace of Sports taking into consideration the transport infrastructure already in  place.   "Kharkiv Arena" has to start working by the end of 2014.  

Competitions in many kinds of sports can be held at the new multi-functional arena: basketball, volleyball, track-and-field, combat sports. The arena is adaptable for an ice rink. Besides, it will be equipped with everything necessary for comfortable visits by handicapped people.

Apart from the multifunctional arena, a training base is planned to be built which after the Eurobasket is over will be transferred to a youth sports school. The works will be financed from the state budget and will cost 58.3 million UAH. the construction's beginning is planned for 1 October 2013, while the completion, for the end of 2014.

As head of the city development and architecture department of Kharkiv Regional State Administration, Mykhailo Rabinovych, said, by the work's rates, Kharkiv today is ahead of other cities which will be hosting Eurobasket-2015.  

The European Basketball Championship is among five most prestigious sports competitions in the world. Eurobasket-2015 will last for 20 days, 90 matches will be held, with 24 national teams from countries of Europe participating. The host cities are Kyiv, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Lviv, Odessa.
